About White Oak

American white oak (Quercus alba) grows throughout the eastern United States. Its pores are naturally plugged, which makes it highly resistant to water. That’s why it’s been used for centuries to build ships and whiskey barrels, and why it’s such a good choice for tables and kitchen islands that see daily use.

  • Color: Light tan to warm golden brown, with less pink than red oak.
  • Grain: Straight and tight. Quartersawn white oak shows beautiful ray “flecks” and is the classic wood of Mission and Arts & Crafts furniture.
  • Hardness: About 1,360 on the Janka scale. Very hard and durable.
  • Aging: Deepens to a richer amber tone over time.
  • Best for: Dining tables, kitchen islands, media consoles, bookcases, and Mission style pieces.

What to Expect from White Oak

  • Price: $$$ (upper-middle of the five woods I offer). Upper-middle of the range. White oak usually costs more than red oak, maple and cherry, but less than walnut.
  • With kids and pets: One of the toughest choices I offer. It’s great for busy family tables and kitchen islands, and its naturally sealed grain handles spills better than most woods.
  • Color over time: Warm golden tan that slowly deepens toward a richer amber over the years.
  • Matching your home: Works in almost any home, from farmhouse to modern. It’s a safe pick if you’re not sure what will match.
  • Care: Coasters for hot and wet items, wipe spills promptly, and a fresh coat of oil and wax once or twice a year.

Why I Like Building With It

White oak is stable, takes joinery beautifully, and stands up to real family life. It’s one of the woods I’m asked for most, and I love how a big white oak tabletop looks once the oil brings the grain to life.

WHERE MY WOOD COMES FROM

I hand-pick every white oak board myself from mills here in upstate New York, including Wightman Lumber in Portlandville, Southern Tier Hardwoods in Apalachin, Butler Hardwoods in Horseheads, and Heartwood in Sherburne. Choosing boards in person lets me match color and grain across your whole piece, so it looks like it came from one tree.

White Oak FAQ

What’s the difference between white oak and red oak?

White oak is a little harder, has a golden-tan color instead of a pinkish tone, and resists water much better because its pores are naturally sealed. Red oak costs less and has bolder, more open grain.

Is white oak good for a kitchen island or dining table?

It’s one of the best choices. It’s hard, stable, and stands up to spills, which is why it’s been used for boats and whiskey barrels for centuries.

Can white oak be stained darker?

Yes, white oak takes stain well if you want a specific color. Most of my customers end up loving its natural tone under oil and wax, though.

What is quartersawn white oak?

It’s a way of cutting the log that shows off shimmering ray patterns called fleck. It’s extra stable and is the classic look of Mission furniture. It costs a bit more because each log yields fewer of those boards.

Does white oak look modern or traditional?

Both. With clean lines it looks modern and Scandinavian, and with Mission or farmhouse details it looks classic.
