RED OAK FURNITURE
Handmade Red Oak Furniture, Built to Order
Red oak is the classic American hardwood. It has bold, open grain with those familiar “cathedral” arches, a warm tone with a hint of red, and real strength. It’s also one of the best values in solid hardwood, so you get heirloom-quality furniture without stretching the budget.

About Red Oak
Northern red oak (Quercus rubra) is one of the most plentiful hardwoods in the eastern United States, including here in New York. It’s been a staple of American furniture, floors, and cabinetry for generations.
- Color: Light brown with a warm pinkish-red cast.
- Grain: Open and pronounced, with strong cathedral patterns on flatsawn boards.
- Hardness: About 1,290 on the Janka scale. Hard and durable.
- Aging: Mellows to a deeper amber over time.
- Best for: Dining tables, desks, nightstands, headboards, and farmhouse style pieces. It also takes stain very well if you want a specific color.
What to Expect from Red Oak
- Price: $ (most affordable of the five woods I offer). The most affordable of the five woods I offer, which makes it the best value in solid hardwood furniture.
- With kids and pets: Hard and durable, close to white oak. Its bold grain also hides small scratches and everyday wear well.
- Color over time: Light brown with a warm pinkish-red cast that mellows toward amber over time.
- Matching your home: If your home has oak floors or trim, and many do, red oak will feel right at home.
- Care: Coasters for hot and wet items, wipe spills promptly, and a fresh coat of oil and wax once or twice a year.
Why I Like Building With It
Red oak has an honest, traditional character I really like, and it’s tough enough for a busy household. My very first nightstand was red oak, and it’s still one of my favorite woods for a warm, classic look.
WHERE MY WOOD COMES FROM
I hand-pick every red oak board myself from mills here in upstate New York, including Wightman Lumber in Portlandville, Southern Tier Hardwoods in Apalachin, Butler Hardwoods in Horseheads, and Heartwood in Sherburne. Choosing boards in person lets me match color and grain across your whole piece, so it looks like it came from one tree.

Red Oak FAQ
Does red oak look cheap?
Not at all. It’s the classic wood of American furniture and has been for generations. In solid wood with good joinery, it looks timeless.
What’s the difference between red oak and white oak?
Red oak has a pinkish tone, bolder open grain and costs less. White oak is golden-tan, a little harder and much more water-resistant.
Can red oak be stained?
Yes. Red oak takes stain better than any of my other woods, so it’s a great choice if you need to match a specific color.
Is red oak good for a kitchen island?
It works well with a good finish and normal care. If the island will have a sink or see lots of water, I’d suggest white oak instead.
Will red oak match my oak floors?
Very likely. Many homes have red oak floors and trim, so red oak furniture usually fits right in.
